How to get rid of redness on the face?

Redness on the face can have multiple causes

Facial redness can be a major source of embarrassment. Whether caused by shyness or more serious skin problems, this redness is very difficult to conceal and can have a significant impact on quality of life.

But how can you tell the difference between all the different types of redness? What are the most effective treatments for eliminating or reducing it?

In the following lines, the experts at FILORGA Laboratories tell you everything you need to know about this unwanted redness.

The Different Types of Facial Redness

Facial redness, also called facial erythema, erythrosis, rosacea, or couperose, is most often seen in people with fair skin. They are the result of a more or less prolonged and significant dilation of the blood vessels located in the dermis, just beneath the epidermis. data-mce-fragment="1">Redness can spread across the entire face or affect only a very localized area such as the cheeks, nose, or forehead, taking the form of patches or spots. It is also often accompanied by itching.

Not all facial redness has the same intensity or duration. Some are very mild and last only a few moments, while others can be very severe and last for days, weeks, or months.

Where does facial redness come from?

Their origins and manifestations are not all the same.

Often, when we talk about blushing, we're referring to an emotional or shy reaction, such as when we're embarrassed or have to speak in public. The face can also become red all over after physical exertion, when blood circulation increases and the body needs to release heat. Finally, a dish or drink that's too spicy, too hot, or too alcoholic can also trigger facial redness.

This type of redness happens to everyone and generally doesn't last long. It's therefore not serious.

Conversely, some redness can be a sign of imbalances or even illnesses that are important to monitor and treat. Examples include:

  • Allergic reactions. Red patches form on the face following contact with or ingestion of an allergen. The severity of these reactions depends on the type of allergy and the person affected.

  • Inflammation. This is a generic term that refers to the body's reaction to the presence of a pathogen or foreign body. Inflammation is a necessary phenomenon for the elimination of these intruders and for healing. It is not a cause for concern as long as it does not last. However, it is accompanied by redness and itching, which can be bothersome.

  • Hormonal fluctuations, such as hot flashes that occur during menopause.

  • Dehydration. The face is constantly exposed to external aggressions such as cold, wind, and pollution. These factors can accelerate the evaporation of water from the skin and cause redness.

  • Psoriasis. This inflammatory skin disease is characterized by outbreaks of red patches that peel (the medical term is "desquamate") and itch intensely. Psoriasis is often hereditary and is the result of excessively rapid skin renewal.

Finally, a well-known type of redness is sunburn, which is an inflammatory reaction following excessive exposure to UV rays.

Sunburn is one of the most common types of facial redness.

How to Fight Facial Redness

Depending on the cause of the redness, medical treatment may sometimes be necessary. In these cases, it will be up to the doctor to prescribe the appropriate medication.
